Zinc Oxide is very important, as evidenced in this clip from "Kentucky Fried Movie."

Press Secretary vs. The Doctor

Check out this blog from The Random Kvetches of Hajii al-Badr. He makes some interesting points. If you don't want to click, here's a snippet:

Nothing is more tragic for our Media Glitterati than when one of their own dies: witness the wall-to-wall coverage and mourning for the passing of Tim Russert. Now, another enabler has died, Tony Snow, former press secretary for the Bush Junta and as of this writing, the New York Times, the LA Times and the Washington Post either have this as the lead story or above the Internet fold to grab your attention.

Meanwhile, buried underneath that imaginary line on the computer screen is an obituary for Dr. Michael DeBakey. What did he do? Is it just another doctor? Well, not exactly. You see, he was a world-famous cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered procedures like bypass surgery. You know what that is? It’s one of the more common surgeries that help keep people alive when they’ve had a heart attack.

Bio Schmio

Management at work is asking staff to write our own bios, so you might not want to put full faith in what you read. I'm not saying they'll be dishonest, but there's a fine line in making yourself not come off like a snooty, overqualified gift to broadcasting or a Joe Blow who simply fell into a good job.

One of the tricky areas in a bio is making your hobbies sound interesting. Sure, it's fun sitting at home watching pro wrestling and reruns of Seinfeld and Everybody Loves Raymond, but do you really want to say that? It sounds a bit classier to say you enjoy reading Shakespeare, attending the symphony and listening to classical music. After many years of reading and hearing bios of others, only one really sticks in my memory. It's from an "icon" in broadcasting and starts like this...

"It all started at a 500-watt radio station in Fresno, California."

If you don't know who said that, drop me an email and I'll tell you. Until then, stay tuned!
